Chronic Rectal PainChronic rectal pain known has chronic proctalgia is a steady, vague, dull ache which lasts 20 minutes or longer and is often worse with sitting.  Individuals with chronic proctalgia often have tightly contracted levator ani muscles and tenderness on examination.  Proctalgia fugax is another type of chronic rectal pain which is more sudden, lasts several seconds to minutes, and then fully subsides between episodes.
